They were talking about the Maryland parents who sued their public school to get their children’s stories featuring LGBTQ characters taken out of elementary school curricula.

Among the books were titles like The Prince and Knight and Uncle Bobby’s Wedding.

Weingarten, who favored having a variety of literature in the school, including the titles mentioned above, was speaking with MacCallum about the matter.

MacCallum started by bringing up Maryland’s educational rankings and making the case that schools ought to prioritize math and reading instruction above expanding the selection of books.

The host was startled when her guest interrupted her as she was discussing the relationship between wealth and education and quoting Maryland’s educational statistics.

Weingarten said, “Martha, sweetheart, sweetheart.”

Social media users are applauding the host’s prompt and professional response.

MacCallum retorted, “Please don’t call me sweetheart.”

Her prompt response appeared to surprise the guest.

“I apologize, I’m sorry,” she said modestly.

For a few more minutes, the two argued passionately on whether or not pupils should be read books with LGBTQ+ characters.

MacCallum argued that although parents should have the authority to choose what their children read, principals should remind their students to “always respect each other.”

At the conclusion of the interview, Weingarten stated, “Kids should be able to be their full selves.”

In response, MacCallum said, “I’m really more concerned with them learning to read, write, and do math than I am with them being their complete selves.”

As the segment came to a conclusion, Weingarten laughed and said, “I agree with you.”

Under an excerpt of the interview, fans praised the host’s prompt response and criticized the guest for being “condescending.”

One X member commented, “She came off as condescending, so I’d be a little upset if she called me sweetheart too.”

The individual who called Weingarten condescending was supported by another poster.

“Congratulations, @marthamaccllum,” the commenter said.

“She is extremely disrespectful and patronizing.”

The host was commended by others for “dunking” on her guest.

Another person commented, “KUDOS to Martha for slam-dunking on Weingarten.” “Weingarten lost the thread entirely at that point.”
