While we were discussing color options, I painted a new resident’s nails today at work, and she said that she wanted clear. “CLEAR!” was the only thing that sprung to mind. That isn’t enjoyable.

“My hands are ugly, and I don’t want to draw attention to them,” she stated when I asked her why she wanted clear. “Your hands tell the story of your life,” I said thoughtfully in response. They narrate tales of adventure, love, and caring. These hands have held and touched things that most people can only hope to experience in their lifetime. After that, she decided to paint her nails pink.

“There are times when what we find so insecure is beautiful to others.”

The fact that the nurse was able to boost the elderly woman’s self-esteem is fantastic. We can all definitely learn from this!
