On the official Gary Sinise Foundation website and his personal Instagram page, the actor revealed that his beloved son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, had passed away after a brave and prolonged fight against cancer. Mac was just 33 years old when he lost his battle, and his passing left a heavy weight of sorrow and heartbreak on the entire family.
Mac’s journey with cancer began on August 8, 2018, just a few months after his mother, Moira, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. The timing was cruel and hard to bear, with both parents facing their own fears and struggles. Mac was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as Chordoma, a tumor that typically develops along the bones of the skull base and spine. It’s an insidious disease, difficult to treat and often resistant to conventional therapies. The diagnosis came as a shock to everyone who loved him, and for a while, it seemed that the battle ahead would be daunting but potentially manageable.
However, despite Moira’s successful treatment—her stage three breast cancer was eventually overcome—Mac’s condition did not improve. Instead, it gradually worsened. Over the years, the disease robbed him of his mobility, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. As the months stretched into years, Mac faced the horrific reality of losing his independence and the ability to do the things he loved most, especially making music. His strength and resilience, however, shone brightly through every challenge.
In his heartfelt message, Gary expressed profound grief over the loss of his caring, talented son. “Like any family experiencing such a loss, we are heartbroken and have been managing as best we can,” he wrote. His words carried a deep sense of pain but also a recognition of how rare and precious their moments together had been. “As parents, it is so difficult losing a child,” he continued, “my heart goes out to all who have suffered a similar loss, and to anyone who has lost a loved one. Even after multiple spine surgeries, which left him paralyzed from the waist down, Mac refused to let his condition define him. Just before his passing, he had completed work on an album titled Resurrection & Revival, a project deeply personal and filled with hope, resilience, and the power of music to heal.
He studied songwriting and composition at the University of Southern California, where he pursued his passion academically and artistically, fulfilling a dream to create music that touched souls. The family is committed to honoring that dream. Even now, they are ensuring that Mac’s album is released and pressed on vinyl, so that his legacy, his music, and his spirit will continue to inspire others. His final resting place was attended by loved ones on January 5, in a farewell that was as beautiful and heartfelt as his life had been.
